A glimpse of Alaska!

johnroadhouse.jpgjohncabin.jpgjohnanddave.jpgdenali.jpgI spent a week in Alaska during late January, the coldest and darkest time of the year. On average, it was -26F daily. Got to meet up with my friend Dave Collins to talk about my new writing projects. Got to spend a couple days at my cabin in Talkeetna, where 20,320 ft. Denali (aka Mt. McKinley) looms on the horizon. I spent many an hour at the Talkeetna Roadhouse, my favorite place on Earth (see the photo of me with Trish Costello, the wonderful owner and master-chef). I had to get up three times a night to restoke the woodstove. Brrr!

Cold Rush!

I was in Reykjavik, Iceland recently. Had a great time even though it was January (a lot like Alaska). Great restaurants, coffee houses, bistros, and bars. You should go yourself!

A recent article

Binghamton University’s student-run newspaper, Pipe Dream, recently ran a wonderful story about me, hailing me as one of the university’s most interesting, inspirational, and most remarkable professors.

Vrrrrooommmmm!

My little baby daughter, Ayiana, turned nine months old in July. Here she is on daddy’s bike (and no, I don’t take her for rides). As you can imagine, my life has really changed . . . and all for the better! One of her pink onesies says, “My finger may be small, but I can wrap my daddy around it.” True!

Another peek.

Welcome, Ayiana!

I became a father again (my other daughter is 23 years old and graduated from college in early May)! I’d like to introduce the world to my daughter, Ayiana. She’s lovely and a blessing. She’s so cute and happy and healthy.

Latest News

After only amonth at it, I’m one-third through my next novel, a perfect companion to Edge of Nowhere, The Great Death, and The Trap.

I’m using my own daughter as the basis for the main character, and I’m going home to Alaska to train as a dog sled musher.

Just got news that Edge of Nowhere was named one of England’s best teenage “Books of 2010″.

Survival

I was recently a guest speaker at Ithaca College. Talked about survival literature.

U.S. Senator Ted Stevens to be missed

john-smelcer-and-us-senator-ted-stevens-web-site.jpg

Former Alaskan U. S. Senator Ted Stevens died in a plane crash in Alaska. “Uncle Ted” to Alaskans, was elected in 1968, and was the longest serving Republican senator in US history. At one time, he was Senate Pro Tempe, third in line to the presidency. He was always a friend to Alaska and to John Smelcer. As a high school senior, Sen. Stevens nominated John for a cadet appointment at West Point. When that did not materialize, he helped John win a four-year Army ROTC scholarship. In the mid-to-late 1990s, Stevens helped John secure grants for his research in Alaska Native languages and cultures and tried to help him obtain funds to build a museum. In 2006, Sen. Stevens generously provided a back cover blurb for John’s The Day That Cries Forever. He will be missed.
